Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to question specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
