Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
