Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
